You know we’re all about looking and feeling good, but we also want our swimwear to do good for the planet.
Let’s dive into what makes ECONYL® our fabric of choice at Zigi Swim, and why it’s so much more than just a buzzword.
What is ECONYL®?
ECONYL® is a regenerated nylon yarn made from 100% waste, things like:
-
Abandoned fishing nets (aka ghost nets)
-
Fabric scraps
-
Industrial plastic waste
-
Carpets that have seen better days
This waste is collected, cleaned, broken down, and reborn as buttery-soft, high-performance swimwear fabric.
Circular, Not Linear
Unlike traditional materials that go from resource → product → landfill, ECONYL® can be infinitely regenerated without losing quality.
That means:
-
Fewer raw materials
-
Less waste
-
A much smaller carbon footprint
(ECONYL® reduces CO₂ emissions by up to 90% compared to virgin nylon!)
Why We Love It
Besides being great for the planet, ECONYL® is:
-
Soft as a second skin
-
Stretchy and sculpting (no saggy swimwear here)
-
Resilient against sun, salt, and sand
-
Long-lasting so you won’t be replacing it every summer
The Problem with Fast Fashion Fabrics
Most fast fashion swimwear is made from virgin polyester or cheap nylon.
- They fade, sag, and gape.
- They don’t last.
- They shed microplastics - tiny plastic particles that pollute our oceans, enter the food chain, and stick around for hundreds of years.
No thanks.
What About Other Sustainable Fabrics?
You might’ve heard of:
-
REPREVE® - made from recycled plastic bottles. Great option, especially for activewear.
-
Recycled polyester (rPET) - widely used, but less durable for swimwear and not quite as circular as ECONYL®.
They’re all doing good work - but for swimwear that hugs, supports, and lasts through endless dips in the sea, ECONYL® came out on top for us.
Why It Matters
At Zigi Swim, sustainability isn’t an afterthought, it’s stitched into every bikini.
Choosing better fabrics is step one in our commitment to doing better by the ocean that inspires us.
